What Size Pool Cue is Right for Me?

The length of a pool cue won’t vary greatly from one pool stick to another, and the width is very similar between all pool sticks.  However, there are some elements of size and weight, as well as color, that can really personalize a pool stick and make it more comfortable for an individual who plays frequently.  How to you know what pool cue is right for you when it comes time to choose one in the bar or even purchase one of your own?

First of all, most pool cues are an average of 57 inches in length, give or take just a bit.  It is rare to find a different length, with the exception of children’s cues that are special ordered, compact cues for smaller spaces and tight corners, and specially ordered pool sticks for those who prefer a personalized length.  Therefore, this is not the most important aspect of choosing a pool cue.

More important to choosing proper pool sticks is to determine the weight you want to use.  The average range for pool cue weight is between 18 and 21 ounces, though some manufacturers regularly offer pool sticks of up to 22 ounces.  Any other weight would be specially ordered.  In terms of making your decision, you should not consider so much the relationship between your size and weight versus the weight of the pool cues.  Rather, determine the right weight for you based on how the weight of the cue feels to you as you wield it on the table.  Does it have the right amount of power for you when you break, and is it light enough to aim it and get that perfect angle on the cue ball?

Another important consideration is the balance of the pool cue.  One thing that will affect the width of the cue is the way that it is balanced.  If there is  a lot of weight in the back end, it could make the grip wider, changing the way that you hold your pool stick.  You may need to determine your comfort level in terms of grip and balance of the pool cue in order to make an informed decision as to whether this is the best tool for you.  As a beginner, this could be a lot to take in and understand.  However, as you become a more advanced pool player, you’ll definitely begin to notice how the pool cue you use makes a difference in your game, and you’ll be ready to invest in a customized pool stick of your own.
